I love eating a fish thats staring back at me. And What is Chicken's paw? Or Aspic of Pig's Ear? I speak English but have not a clue. Anyway its been awhile since I've posted some powerful chinese culinary pictures. And it doesnt get much more powerful than the fiery blast of szechuan. I think just about everything is covered in chiles. Actually if you ask me, they probably need all that spice to cover up the fact they are eating dog balls and horse rectum. just kiddddingggg.

Dakota Fanning is one hella talented tweenchildstar and there are great shots of hong kong life, mixed wtih a little beginner cantonese. the lovey bits are nice too if you go for that :)

lesson #1 in china. looks are always deceiving.

Mooncakes sound delicious, look alright and taste like toewax and melted crayons, in a pastry shell.

apparently its an egg of sorts in the middle..all dried up and chalky stuck into the thick yeasty gelatinous mound.

i kinda feel out of the cool group on this one. There have been a dozen or so confirmed cases of swine flue in my office and now even my boss keeps a mask at her desk. I just cant do it though, and I cant talk to people in a mask without wanting to laugh. The family nurse assures me that they dont even protect against disease after 20 minutes or so, however the majority of HK doesnt seem to know this or care. Masks are as common as shirts now.(which actually isnt saying much for parts of kowloon and wanchai).

DRAGONBOAT FESTIVAL SPIRIT

Thousands of people at Stanley Thursday to see the DragonBoat races. It was a little gloomy and rainy but everyone was pumped anyway. My camera only survived the first half of the day walking along the beach to see our UofM friends compete. It ws packed madness insanity. I was drenched. One fatal wave crash to the head was all it took to end my Nikon. The teams were all in spirit overdrive, so much fun. It felt like all of HK was there and paparazzi too. The second half of the day we retired to our Junk Boat out on the harbor for drinks and food and a little good time chinese kareoke. Then the monsoon really started to hit and our little boat had to rock its way back to central. 2 hours later after nearly getting sick I stumbled off the junk to end my first experience on the South Asian Seas.

One of the best exhibitions i've been to in awhile. Hundreds of International galleries presented at the HKCEC a week or so ago and it was amazing. My favorites were the sculptures and freestanding pieces. Some of the NY galleries were quite good and Tokyo as well but I was really feeling the Chinese galleries the most. See below for my favorites. I dont know if I could put one of the fat men in my apt...but on second thought somewhere near the refrigerator wouldnt be a bad idea....I also dont know how attractive it would be to have spilled bean soup all over the floor in the living room. But definitely something to talk about.

Jiggly Bunny Mounds.

I'm not sure if they are jello...or a hard custard but I first noticed them around Easter time and thought it was just a cute phase. oh no.

These babies are out year round here in HK. and its not just bunnies, we got frogs, bees, monkeys...you name it. I braved trying one of these jiggly animals the other day and there is actually cake inside. turns out the jiggly mounds are pretty good.

Lunch with the coworkers is always interesting. They love to help introduce me to the finer delicacies of cantonese cuisine...chicken feet, cow stomach, and as seen here, octopus balls.

BUDDAH MOUNTAIN

On the Island of Lantau in the South Asian Seas, tucked deep into the hills and accessible by the Ngong Ping Sky Rail lies the Buddah. The Biggest man-made outdoor Buddah sculpture in the world. Its kinda shocking and slightly weird. Such a tourist trap. And yet a religious symbol still?

Most interesting part:Po lin Monastary at the bottom, buddhist monks serve vegetarian meals to visitors for a small fee. The soup comes first and looks like hot dish water with a few bubbles..i found one piece of bamboo at the bottom and figured out that it was bamboo soup...then there's the veggies and meat flavored tofu, RICE, tea, fried egg rolls minus the egg and bok choy. the best is the chinese cafeteria type setting and NO PHOTOGRAPHY allowed. like something special is going on. secretive monks.

THE STAR FERRY

Simply the best part of living in honkyland.

Riding the Ferry is practically free and the most enjoyable to cross the Harbor from HK island to Kowloon. Smell the sea air? watch the skyline? Feel the breeze? grab a starbucks on the way on and I'm set. This may just get incorporated into my morning and evening commute to work...screw the MTR. I'll go by boat.

I once hopped a ride on the ferry to make it to the Valentino in central to buy the last 2 grey ribbon belts they had in all of HK so I could pass it off to coworkers on a flight to NY with no time to spare. its been true love ever since.

Hawk lands on Elgin Street

So for my 25th birthday I am moving into my first -Just Me- apartment. literally the lease is signed for May 31st.

My new residence, I suppose its unwise to post my address on the internet...is on Elgin Street in the heart of Soho. Hong Kong. I am going to be 25 and living in my own apt in Hong Kong with a balcony and a ton of windows and an amazing private roof and a rather small closet.

i know i know how could i have chosen an apartment with a normal person closet? Madness right? where will the hats go? the shoes? I will have to work something out. The hawk can be a genius at times. Also there is only a half sized fridge. If I were a normal girl that knows how to cook I suppose this would be a problem, I am more concerned about the fact that I cannot keep massive amounts of icecream on hand as the freezer will probably only fit one or two popsicles.

a true china doll crisis if you ask me! Hong Kong summer without ice cream? what will I do?

My mind is thoroughly wrapped around the idea of decorating my new place.

Line art. Chairs. that anthropolgie feel I so love..big chairs...plants...green. a great big comfy chair-did i say chairs yet? Im in love with the idea of a great big wonderful perfect chair. chiars in general.fascinating.

I specifically love the idea of the birch forest or aspen trees on some of the walls. Gives it that nature feel. Especially with all the windows it will feel like a wonderful forest..there's bamboo poles marking the entranceway so that would be a fun thing to play off as well..
anyway these pics are my starting inspiration!

ok so its 7 minutes to 6pm here in HK. I just got back from a field trip meeting across the street with Huafu. Melange yarn dyers. very cool for me, very boring for others i suppose.
